For big trains, bigger stories and the biggest day out, come to York to the world's largest Railway Museum. Explore our   three giant halls for a complete family experience packed full of incredible trains and interactive fun and discover the fascinating Story of the Train.

With true railway legends such as Shinkansen, the sleek 'Bullet Train' and Mallard, the fastest ever steam locomotive, plus a replica of Stephenson's Rocket, this is your chance to see the really big names in trains.

Daily demonstrations include the locomotive turntable and the winding engines. You can relive the splendour of days gone by with a steam or diesel ride behind one of our engines, or perhaps take a trip on our miniature railway before relaxing in our Play 'n' Picnic Area. In The Workshop, you can see the traditional restoration skills of our engineers and craftsmen or have fun building your own models using amazing interactive displays. Children can learn how to build a bridge, control the signals or discover what keeps a train on the tracks in the Interactive LearningCentre .

THE NORWICH UNION YORKSHIRE WHEEL (charges apply). Come and ride York's new landmark 'must see' attraction, soaring 60 metres (198 feet) into the sky, and get some of the best views in the county! A new permanent exhibition.

In 2004, with huge public support, the National Railway Museum saved Flying Scotsman for the nation when it came up for sale. Still in operation today, FlyingScotsman has become a legend which involves a train, a locomotive, a speed record and the personal memories of thousands of people. With a rich mix of objects, stories, audio visual displays and interactives, this first ever permanent exhibition dedicated to Flying Scotsman unlocks the history of an icon.
